A thriving international metropolis at the southern tip of Taiwan, Kaohsiung was the host city for the 2009 World Games. Alishan Mountain range, which is part of the Central Mountain range, is the collective name of 18 peaks including Dadong Mountain. Overlapping peaks, cliffs, and valleys are the make up the typical view and landscape.Since the high mountains and broad valleys block the strong southwest wind, the valley is usually foggy and cloudy like a vast, tumultuous sea. When the sun rises from the Central Mountain range and the light sweeps over the sky, the clouds suddenly give way to the clear sky to produce a grand view. In the evening, the clouds are even more beautiful with their magnificent afterglow. To many visitors, the red and gold splendor of the clouds, sunrise, and sunset in Alishan, are truly unforgettable and leave lasting memories. Tashan and Duigauyuei are the most impressive landscapes in Alishan. In Tashan, it is easy to locate the numerous layers of rocks wrinkled from orogeny; while in Duigauyuei, visitors can view the endless peaks of the Central and Yushan Mountain ranges and observe the magnificent sea of clouds.
In the early days, Alishan was one of three major logging areas.dominated by Taiwanese Yellow Cypress and Red Cypress forests. Along with the common Tertiary fossils, Taiwania, Hemlock, and Huashan Pine are among the “Top Five in Alishan”. Neighboring broadleaf trees are mainly Fagaceae. Giant cypress trees are the main attraction in Alishan because it is rare to see a giant cypress, and even more rare to see a group of cypress trees in the United States and Japan, the two other countries where cypress grow. In addition to watching the fragrant ancient tree and thousand-year-old cypress, visitors must be sure to visit the tall Taiwania next to Ciyun Temple. There are so many flowers to look at in Alishan: Cherry Blossoms in March-April, Yushan Rhododendron in April and the valuable Formosan Pleione.The Yellow Azalea living among the cypress trees in June are also world-class.
